Survival Horror Origins
Survival horror as a defined game genre was established by the original Resident Evil (Capcom, 1996) and Silent Hill (Konami, 1999) — though both drew on earlier games including Alone in the Dark (1992) and Sweet Home (1989). The survival horror formula — limited resources, powerful enemies, puzzle solving, and an atmosphere of sustained dread — proved commercially durable and creatively adaptable. Resident Evil's focus on resource management and action; Silent Hill's emphasis on psychological horror, fog, and the protagonist's internal landscape as the game's actual terrain — these two poles have defined the genre's possibilities for thirty years.
Essential Horror Games
Silent Hill 2 (2001): The best horror game ever made by most measures — its story of a man searching a fog-bound town for his dead wife, guided by monsters that are projections of his own psychology, achieves genuine literary depth alongside relentless atmospheric dread. Amnesia: The Dark Descent (2010): First-person horror with no combat — the player can only hide or run, and the darkness itself depletes sanity. Outlast (2013): Found-footage horror aesthetic in game form; genuinely effective and deeply unpleasant. SOMA (2015, Frictional Games): Philosophical horror that uses science fiction body horror to ask genuinely disturbing questions about identity and consciousness. Alien: Isolation (2014): The most effective single-creature pursuit game ever made; the Alien's AI creates genuine unpredictable terror across a thirty-hour campaign.
Horror Games and Cosplay
Video game horror characters provide some of the most elaborate and visually compelling cosplay subjects: the Nurse and Pyramid Head from Silent Hill; the various Resident Evil characters (Nemesis, Lady Dimitrescu); the monsters of FromSoftware's Soulsborne games with their massive, ornate armour designs; and the creature designs from Alien and Dead Space. Gothic and horror game character cosplay requires the same combination of accurate construction and atmospheric presentation as film-based horror cosplay — and often more complex armour and creature work given game design's freedom from practical wearability constraints.
