Horror Makeup — SFX, Prosthetics, and Creature Design

Horror makeup is where beauty meets the grotesque — the craft that turns humans into monsters.

Basic Horror Makeup Techniques

Entry-level horror makeup requires minimal investment but produces dramatic results when techniques are correctly applied. The essential beginner techniques: Bruising — applied with a makeup sponge using purple, red, and yellow in layers; begin with the deepest colour at the centre and blend outward through progressively lighter and warmer tones. Cuts and wounds — liquid latex applied to skin in multiple thin layers, allowed to dry completely between coats, then painted and textured; spirit gum-attached tissue paper creates convincing wound texture. Dark eye circles — the single most universally effective horror makeup element; deep purple and grey applied below the eye, blended upward to create the hollowed-out look of exhaustion, illness, or the supernatural. Pale foundation — two or more shades lighter than your natural skin tone, applied with full coverage primer beneath, creates the instantly recognisable aesthetic of the undead.

Prosthetics and Appliances

Prosthetics — pre-made pieces of foam latex, silicone, or gelatin that are adhered to the skin and blended — elevate horror makeup from theatrical effect to convincing transformation. Basic prosthetic techniques: Adhesive — Pros-Aide and spirit gum are the primary adhesives for foam latex and foam rubber prosthetics; skin-preparation powder and release agent are required for clean application and removal. Blending edges — the edge of a prosthetic is its most visible element; a thin, well-feathered edge blended with latex or silicone sealer and careful paint work should disappear into the skin. Painting — PAX paint (a mixture of Pros-Aide and acrylic paint) applied with a stipple sponge creates realistic skin texture; blood vessels and surface variation built up in layers produce the naturalistic quality that distinguishes professional makeup from amateur.

Full Creature Design

Full creature design — transforming a human face and body into a recognisable non-human character — is the apex of horror makeup craft. The process typically involves: concept design and reference collection; sculpting the character's features in clay; moulding the sculpt in silicone or fibreglass; casting the appliances in foam latex or silicone; and application, painting, and hair work. The resulting prosthetic pieces — brow appliance, nose tip, cheek pieces, full face cowl — are applied in sequence over several hours to produce the finished character. Convention standard creature makeups can be achieved in 3-5 hours of application; professional film-quality work requires 4-8 hours and a team of makeup artists.
