Horror Poetry and Dark Verse — When Words Become Fear

The darkest thoughts are sometimes best expressed in verse — here is the poetry of the dark imagination.

Edgar Allan Poe and Gothic Poetry

Edgar Allan Poe is the central figure of horror and gothic poetry in English — his poems achieve a musical and atmospheric intensity that his prose only approaches in its best moments. 'The Raven' (1845) — its relentless trochaic octameter, its incantatory refrain 'Nevermore', and its meditation on grief and the loss of an idealised woman — is the most technically accomplished horror poem in the English language and the best known. 'Annabel Lee' (1849), 'Ulalume' (1847), and 'The Bells' (1848) explore related themes — loss, obsession, and the beautiful woman as a symbol of everything that death destroys — with the same combination of musical virtuosity and genuine emotional darkness.

The Romantic Dark Tradition

Poe worked within a broader Romantic tradition of dark verse that includes: Lord Byron — particularly the 'Turkish Tales' and Manfred, where the Byronic hero's glamorous isolation anticipates every gothic protagonist that follows. Percy Bysshe Shelley — 'Ozymandias' as the definitive meditation on mortality and the end of empires. Samuel Taylor Coleridge — 'The Rime of the Ancient Mariner' (1798) is the greatest supernatural narrative poem in English, a study in guilt, isolation, and the haunting of consciousness by terrible deeds. John Keats — 'La Belle Dame Sans Merci' and 'Lamia', both concerning supernatural femmes fatales who destroy the men they enchant.

Contemporary Dark Poetry

Contemporary dark poetry and spoken word draws on all of these traditions while engaging with contemporary horror aesthetics. Anne Carson's Autobiography of Red (reimagining the Geryon myth with the monster as sympathetic protagonist); Mary Oliver's nature poetry (which takes seriously the darker aspects of the natural world); and the extensive world of horror and dark literary magazines — Strange Horizons, The Dark, Nightscript — publish poetry that works within the gothic and horror tradition with contemporary formal and thematic concerns.
